In a word: yes. But as always, it depends on the rules the players have agreed upon. So allow us to explain what the official rules of the rope ball game have to say about canceling points. Imagine the following scenario. A player stands at the toss line and chucks their first bola, which lands on the top ladder rung.
Remember, that one is worth 3 points. Still, you may not celebrate just yet. As they throw their second bola, they end up knocking the first one off the ladder! Also, if two players or teams are playing with a single ladder, having both of their bolas land on one rung cancels out the points. For example, you could have two red bolas and a blue bola on the top step. If that happens, you would only add the 3 points to the blue team, since a bola would be taken from each side.
The whole point of ladder toss is to have some fun, so, as with all of the other rules, including it in the game is entirely up to the players. You can even bounce them off the ground. However, most people use an underhand method of tossing.
Typically, players hold the ball at one end of the bola in their hand while the other one hangs at the end of the rope. Then, they swing their arm back a bit and release the bola with a forward motion. Separating the balls like this makes it more likely for the rope part of the bola to completely wrap around the ladder rung.
Players who have never player ladder toss tend to find this portion of the game more a matter of chance than anything else. However, the game actually takes more than just throwing skills. According to the official ladder golf game rules, distracting the opposing player or team is not only allowed but encouraged. Everything short of physically touching your opponent is fair game! Namely, when the opposing team is tossing their bolas onto your ladder, stand off to the side.
Also, bolas are for ladder toss, not horseplay. If you have kids, you ought to teach them not to misuse the bolas or climb the ladders. Surely no one needs to be garrotted, no matter how intense the round is. In fact, someone getting hurt will only lead to an abrupt end of the game. We all know the ladder toss rules, the glossary, and the scoring system. And, we even managed to learn some tossing tricks! As we have mentioned before, there is a single company that holds the patent for the ladder ball game.
However, since the game had existed since long before it was patented, many other companies have tried their hand at making a ladder toss set.
So we cannot even say that the original patent holders make the best product — although, of course, we encourage you to try different ones. Certainly, online shopping is the easiest way to get your hands on a ladder ball set.
Amazon actually has a whole ladder ball subcategory of products in their Outdoor Games section. In fact, they actually have all sorts of sets, as well as bolas of various colors. Since most ladder ball sets come with only six bolas, three of each color, you may well find yourself in need of a few extras.

Heather Painchaud. Rules are not consistent everywhere, but a particular set are nevertheless are included in this article. Make sure that you understand local rules before playing with others. Ladder golf is constructed primarily of PVC pipe and fittings, available at any home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. All but the golf balls are available at home improvement stores, and they may have "contractor packs" of the elbows and T's.
Wal-Mart or other department stores often carry cheap golf balls. PVC pipe is very easily cut with any fine tooth saw; after cutting clean the burrs from the cut with either a knife of a piece of sandpaper. Note that the lengths of pipe exactly match the total length of pipe pieces needed - at least one piece from each length of pipe will be shorter than the rest due to the kerf thickness of the blade of the saw.
Make sure the cuts are reasonably square to the pipe as a large angle cut will not fit firmly into the PVC fittings. After all the cuts are made it is time to assemble the ladders. Fit the pieces together as shown in the picture, firmly pushing and twisting the pipe into the fittings. Do not glue the pieces together unless a permanent games is desired - one of the advantages to a ladder toss game is its portability.
Pieces may be gently tapped together with a hammer, but care is needed not to drive them too far in as they will be very difficult to get out. Two of the ladders are necessary for a game and the materials list reflects that.
Six bolos are needed for the game, three of one color and three of another. A drill press with a vise is preferable, but an alternative method is shown in the picture. Do not try to hold the ball with your hands as it will certainly twist and injury is likely. A helper would be advisable if a vise is not available as the plastic and rubber in a golf ball are tough and want to "grab" the drill bit so it takes a good bit of force to hold the ball steady.
With the holes drilled it is time to paint the bolo balls. A good way to do this is to string the balls onto a stiff wire or small rod and paint several at one time. Each ball may be turned and sprayed completely all the way around in this manner. Most games use two different colors 6 balls of each color but using 6 unpainted white balls will also work. Red and blue are popular but any colors of your choice are perfectly acceptable. When the paint is dried well the balls may be put onto the rope.
Nylon rope has a strong tendency to fray badly at the ends and the solution is to heat it right at the end until the threads of nylon have melted into a solid lump. A pair of wire cutters will also work very well for this as well as cutting the rope. Slide two golf balls of the same color onto the rope and tie a hard knot as close as possible to the burned end.
With one golf ball against the knot, slide the other one away from it so that it is 13" from the center of one ball to the center of the other with the rope held taut. Cut the rope some 6" further out from the second ball and again tie a hard knot in it so that when the balls are slid as far apart as possible the 13" measurement is maintained. Cut off the excess and again melt the cut ends.
A visit where we swam in the ocean, toured a battleship, and played lots of outdoor games. They were packing up their car to head out and the meltdown began.
It was neither. The meltdown was because of ladder golf. Specifically the ladder golf that they had just packed into their trunk. They had brought this game so we could all play it. Apparently my son thought the ladder golf was staying with us. This game is perfect for parties. For a crowd, add more playing pieces and add more people to each team. Will try ladder golf with my daughter.
