With this new portable media player, physicians and administrators can both capture and access patient files and records with a few clicks, and view, listen, and record content with ease. Although most may consider portable video players pure entertainment products, several applications do exist for professionals, particularly in healthcare, that enable true productivity in a handheld device.
Users can research the Web, send and receive Web-based e-mail, and play media files from the computer onto an external display such as a TV or projector. The WiFi also features a bright, customizable screen with large icons that are easy on the eyes and allow for simple navigation through the features of the product.
The touch screen player lets users access media and the Internet quickly and easily either using the stylus, fingertips, or the right side navigation buttons. Because the ARCHOS Wi-Fi houses and can record the full spectrum of media files, healthcare professionals will find several uses for the player in the workplace.
Common browser functions such as zoom, navigation back, forward, reload , browser tabbing, search via Google , home page, URL entry, and even bookmarking are based in the context submenu. Opera even allows for blocking pop-ups, and deleting cookies and history. The browsing setup is quite good, though performance is another story more later. Page two of the main menu features an additional wireless feature called File Server.
This allows this "computer" to be seen with write- and read-only access on a network. Enabling the file server allows you to play files remotely off the device; or you can actually play network-based files on the itself. What's missing from the equation is a way to feed the device content in an easy way. You can download files or applications they appear in your Downloads folder , but many standard apps don't open in this Linux environment. It would be cool to have a dedicated iTunes-like store for purchasing or streaming audio or video; streaming music outside of streaming off a Wi-Fi network, or downloading a file and then playing it so far doesn't seem possible not compatible with PLS files.
Visiting sites such as YouTube are a waste since it requires a Flash player. The Wi-Fi element is much more appropriate for browsing and e-mail, less for downloading. A dedicated Internet radio option could have been cool on this device. Also, there is no ad hoc mode so you can't connect directly with other Zunes, er, I mean WiFi devices unless you do so via the network.
Close to great, but not great The WiFi is seemingly the answer to many mobile users' idealistic dreams. Video, music, and photos packed into a compact multimedia powerhouse, with a screen big enough to surf the Web effectively. The device is impressive. However, having used the , , and , I have to say processor performance on the WiFi is disappointing, particularly for Web browsing and general menu navigation, where you'll notice one-to-two second delays across the board.
Video, music, and photo playback is nice and normal once you get into those operations--playback is always skip or stutter free. But you'll notice that for some functions such as video scrubbing , there is a delay that's long enough for you to question the touch-screen's sensitivity in most cases, the Archos has received your input. Web browsing can be a pain when the content hasn't fully loaded and you're trying to scroll up or down.
If you're not a patient surfer, you'll get no reaction or a delayed reaction that is much worse than most of us are used to. You'll also notice the Opera browser options can take a second or two to register.
Download speeds varied from fast to middling. Battery life is probably the biggest performance issue outside of the speed of the processor. The unit is rated for 14 or 15; two different numbers from Archos for audio playback and five hours for video--not bad, but our experience with 04 devices shows that battery life can be a bit lower than rated. Even though it has a nice big screen, it only loads a portion of the screen so you have to drag the screen to where you want to position it.
The lack of flash capability really restricted how you could use the internet on it. The built-in speaker wasn't very loud. Almost DVD quality. One problem that really bothered me was that you were limited to what formats you could put on unless you bought the plug ins from the Archos website.
The battery life is so horrible. Watching a video, you would have about hours of play. For mp3s, you would have hours of play. Using the wifi, you could get hours of life. The charger that it came with was usb to pc, which charges pretty slowly unless you buy the optional DVC charger.
So you have to use it sparingly or buy another battery when you're traveling. The storage capacity is a big plus and the screen size but you're gonna need to buy a lot of accessories to really get the benefits of this player.
Read full review. All in one entertainment system in a nice looking unit. Good for travel. Average battery life - 5 hours for video. Spotty wifi connection for internet access - don't buy this unit if internet access is critical.
Screen not as bright or clear as some other manufacturers but adequate. If you want brighter screen, go with without wifi. Good music playback but the use of controls at right is not intutive nor easy, especially in the dark. The biggest draw is that you get a nice screen size for a very good price. It's a decent unit that doesn't excel in any one thing but is adequate in all except for the wifi. I was looking for an MP3 and slideshow player and the fit the bill.
It's been working out very well for me. I really don't do movies or video with it so I can't tell you much about that and I also have no need for the docking station that costs extra.
I purchased an extra battery and the stock leather case. Besides just enjoying it for entertainment, I use it to demo my band by playing our music while displaying a slide show. I also utilize it to give public education presentations to small groups.
Totally portable and the pictures look great. So far works flawlessly. No crashes or lockups. I did enounter some problems when scanning some pictures into it and had to make some adjustments to the scanner settings but that was no big deal.
Haven't had any other problems with it at all. Hoo ks up via it's proprietary USB connector and shows up as another drive. Drag and drop. Set up your folders and files anyway you want or use software to synch up. It is very slow to recharge. You can spend extra dollars for other options that improve charging speed and file compatability if you want.
But since it's now "last years model" and doesn't have internet connectivity it's a real steal. You can get a very good price on them if you look around.
It's been a great value for me. Don't know why they skimped on the audio punchiness on the but it's not as loud or clean as the older model. However, for my uses it's just fine. And the picture on the is very nice.
